Yard desk

WhatsApp is fastest for anything urgent, including damage and grounding. Email suits scope documents, drawings and survey reports.

What to send with a first enquiry

The more of this you can include, the faster the first answer is useful rather than generic.

Item Why it matters
Length overall, beam, loaded draft Eliminates unsuitable facilities immediately. Loaded draft, not brochure draft.
Displacement Decides which lift can take the boat at all.
Hull material and year Changes repair method, discovery allowance and coating approach.
Propulsion and running gear Affects sling positions and underwater work scope.
Current location and condition Decides whether this is a planned job or a stabilise-first job.
The work list as you see it Even a rough list; we will convert it into a priced scope.
Dates you cannot move Charter commitments, survey deadlines, insurance dates.
Photographs For damage, more useful than any description.

If the vessel is in trouble now

Emergency sequence

Message on WhatsApp with the position, what happened, whether the boat is taking water, and whether anyone is injured. Safety of life first, then stabilising the vessel, then getting it somewhere it can be lifted. Scope and estimate come after the boat is secure — not before. The process is set out in emergency haul-out after grounding or impact damage.

Response and language

The desk works in English and Indonesian. Enquiries are answered during Bali working hours (UTC+8) and urgent WhatsApp messages outside them are picked up as soon as the desk is back. If a matter is safety-critical, say so in the first line of the message rather than in the third paragraph.

Which contract applies

Which entity issues your contract depends on the class of work, and it is stated on the quotation before anything is signed:

  • Repair, refit, haul-out, vessel sale — PT Komodo Galangan Nusantara.
  • Ongoing boat management — PT Komodo Vessel Management.
  • Brokerage, charter marketing, commercial representation — PT Komodo Bahari Nusantara.

Separate contracts, separate fees, separate ledgers.

Before you write

If you want to arrive at the conversation already knowing what will constrain your job, the two most useful pages are the shipyard capability guide and Bali boat yard locations. If you are planning rather than reacting, yacht maintenance Bali sets out the calendar that prevents most emergency calls in the first place.

What happens after you write

Step What we do Typical timing
Acknowledgement Confirm receipt and flag anything obviously safety-critical. Same working day
First read Assess feasibility against draft, weight, lift capacity and season; name the realistic options. 1–2 days
Attendance proposal Where a survey is needed, propose scope, timing and the fee for it. With the first read
Survey Attend the vessel; photographs and measurements taken. By arrangement
Written scope and estimate Priced item list in USD, exclusions stated, hold points named, discovery allowance shown. 2–4 days after survey
Booking Yard placement, slot with stated tolerance, lift plan and access arrangements. Subject to slot

Questions we will ask you

None of these are administrative. Each one changes the answer you get.

  • What is the boat’s next commitment? A charter date, a survey deadline or an insurance renewal changes the sequencing entirely.
  • How long has it been since the last haul-out? This sets the expected discovery, which sets the allowance.
  • Do you have the general arrangement and documented lifting points? If not, we build a plan from drawings before the boat arrives.
  • Is the vessel insured, and does the cover extend to storage ashore and repair? It frequently does not, and yards ask before lifting.
  • Who is your decision-maker on variations? Somebody must be able to approve in writing quickly, or work stops at hold points waiting.
  • Will crew remain aboard? This affects yard selection and hot-work scheduling.

Things we will tell you honestly

  • If the vessel is too large, too deep or too wide for the facilities available here.
  • If the season means the slot you want does not realistically exist.
  • If the scope as you have described it is a refit wearing the clothes of a repair.
  • If the work should be done somewhere other than Bali.
What we will not do

Quote a figure before survey to win the job, then rebuild it through variations. If a number cannot honestly be given yet, we say what it depends on instead.

Working languages, records and confidentiality

Enquiries, scopes and job files are produced in English; discussion with yards and contractors happens in Indonesian, and we translate where it matters rather than assuming everyone in the chain read the same document. Every scope you receive is the version the yard is working to, not a summary of it.

Vessel details, defect histories and commercial terms are treated as confidential. We do not publish vessel names, we do not use client photographs for marketing without written permission, and references are offered directly to serious enquiries with the relevant owner’s consent rather than displayed on a public page. That is also why the project portfolio is written as anonymised profiles.

If you are comparing quotations

Send us the other quotation if you want a straight read on it. The questions worth asking of any yard estimate are the same ones we apply to our own: what is explicitly excluded, where are the hold points, is there a discovery allowance or an optimistic silence, is waste handling costed, and what happens commercially if the boat overstays the slot. A low headline figure with none of those answered is not a lower price — it is the same price with the difficult parts deferred.

Frequently asked questions

What is the fastest way to reach the yard desk?

WhatsApp on +62 811 3823 875. For damage or grounding, message the position and condition first and the detail afterwards.

Do you charge for an initial assessment?

A first read on feasibility and likely windows from particulars costs nothing. A physical survey and a written scope are chargeable work, and the fee is stated before it is carried out.

What currency will I be quoted in?

USD, for the scope, any variations and the final account.

Do you work outside Bali?

This desk covers Bali. Where a vessel would be better served by a facility elsewhere in Indonesia, we say so and point you to the wider network rather than forcing the job into the wrong yard.

Can I visit the boat during the work?

Yes, subject to the individual yard's access and safety rules, which we confirm at booking. Hold-point inspections are the natural moments to attend.

Talk to the Bali yard desk
