Hardstand for anything staying ashore more than a few days, and for any job needing access all round the hull; slipway for heavy displacement, long keels and timber vessels that should be supported along their length rather than at sling points. The decision is structural, not commercial.
How each supports the hull
Hardstand
The boat sits on keel blocks carrying the weight, with side stands or props preventing it falling over. The critical discipline is that blocks go under structure — bulkheads, floors, structural members — and not under unsupported panel. Side stands are stabilisers, not load-bearers, and they need re-checking after the hull settles and after heavy rain moves the ground.
Advantages: access all round the hull, blocks can be moved as a scheduled event to coat the areas beneath them, long stays are normal, and the boat can be placed near the trades working on it.
Risks: hard spots from badly placed blocks, particularly on GRP over a long stay in tropical heat, showing up later as print-through that has to be faired out.
Slipway
The boat floats onto a submerged cradle which is winched up rails. The cradle supports the hull along its length, which distributes load far better for heavy or long-keeled vessels and for timber hulls that do not tolerate point loading.
Advantages: better load distribution, no sling contact with appendages, and suitability for hull forms that a travel lift handles poorly.
Risks: the cradle must fit the hull form — a poor fit is worse than slings; access around the hull is restricted; and the slipway is shared infrastructure, so long occupancy is discouraged.

What a long stay does to a boat
Time ashore is not neutral. Over weeks and months in a tropical climate:
- GRP can take a set over badly placed blocks; gelcoat chalks under ultraviolet; unventilated interiors grow mould.
- Timber dries and shrinks, opening seams and loosening fastenings, then needs take-up time after launch.
- Steel corrodes where blocks trap moisture against the plating and where coating was damaged during blocking.
- Aluminium is at galvanic risk from contact with incompatible blocking materials and yard steelwork.
- Everything soft — hoses, belts, seals, canvas, upholstery — degrades faster in heat and humidity than in use.
Agree, in writing, that somebody walks the boat on a set interval and records what they saw. Unattended storage is where covers tear, small leaks become interior damage, and stands work loose after rain.
Preparing for the stay, whichever you choose
- Trim the boat on the blocks so rain runs off rather than pooling, and clear every deck drain and scupper.
- Ventilate. Airflow through the interior beats sealing it, always, in this climate.
- Remove soft goods — cushions, mattresses, charts, books. They do not survive a wet-season lay-up aboard.
- Treat fuel and manage tank levels to limit condensation and diesel bug growth.
- Set a battery regime rather than disconnecting and forgetting.
- Use UV-rated covers. Low-grade sheeting shreds within a season and abrades gelcoat while it does.
- Insect and rodent control at the props and stands, which is the boarding route.
- Confirm insurance covers the vessel ashore and under repair, which is not automatic.
Coming out of lay-up
Recommissioning is a scoped job: seacocks exercised and inspected, hoses and clamps checked, impellers and filters renewed, belts inspected, batteries load-tested, systems run under load, and a sea trial before the boat carries anyone. A timber vessel needs take-up time watched. A short decision rule
If the hull needs supporting along its length, use the slipway. If the job needs access around the hull or the boat is staying more than a few days, use the hardstand. If both are true — a heavy timber hull needing a long programme — the honest answer is that the vessel needs a purpose-built cradle on a hardstand, and that should be scoped and priced deliberately rather than improvised on lift day.
