Boat repair in Bali runs fastest when the damage is defined before the boat moves. This desk surveys the vessel, converts the findings into a written repair scope priced in USD, places the work with a yard or contractor equipped for that specific repair, and supervises it through to sea trial.
Most repair jobs that go badly in Bali go badly for one of three reasons: the scope was verbal, the yard was chosen for proximity rather than capability, or nobody was standing on the hardstand when a hidden defect appeared. The order of work below exists to remove all three.
What “repair” covers here
Hull and structure
GRP laminate repair after impact, delamination, or core saturation; steel and aluminium plate renewal and welding; timber hull repair including plank and frame replacement on traditional hulls. Structural repair is scoped from the inside as well as the outside — a clean-looking topside patch over a cracked stringer is a warranty claim waiting to happen. For blistering and moisture ingress specifically, see osmosis and blister repair on GRP hulls.
Propulsion and steering
Shaft alignment, cutless bearing renewal, stern gland replacement, propeller repair and re-pitching, rudder stock and bearing work, and engine repair up to full repowering. Underwater running gear is normally addressed during a lift; see propeller, shaft and rudder work during a haul-out.
Systems
Electrical distribution and rewiring, battery and charging systems, generators, watermakers, refrigeration, air conditioning, bilge and firefighting systems, navigation and communications. Systems repair in the tropics is frequently a corrosion problem wearing an electrical mask — see tropical corrosion control.
Deck and interior
Deck leaks and hardware re-bedding, teak deck repair and recaulking, hatch and window reseal, upholstery, joinery and headlining. Interior water damage is repaired after the source is proven dry, not before.
The sequence we use
| Step | Purpose | Typical duration |
|---|---|---|
| Damage report | Photographs, position, what happened, what the crew already did. | Same day |
| Attendance | Physical inspection afloat, and on the hard if the damage is below the waterline. | 1–2 days |
| Scope and estimate | Priced item list in USD with clear exclusions and named hold points. | 2–4 days |
| Yard placement | Match to lift capacity, draft on approach, workshop trades and available slot. | Subject to slot |
| Execution | Supervised work with a photographic record per stage. | Per scope |
| Trial and handover | Systems run, sea trial where relevant, closing file issued. | 1–2 days |
A hold point is a moment where work stops until it is inspected — after stripping, after fairing, before primer, before re-launch. Written hold points are the most economical way to keep a repair honest, because they force discovery to happen while the fix is still a small job.
What drives the cost of a repair in Bali
We do not publish fixed prices, because a repair estimate written before the surface is stripped is a guess. What we can be transparent about are the variables that actually move the number:
- Access. Whether the damage can be reached afloat or requires a lift. A lift converts a one-day job into a slot-dependent job.
- Discovery. How much sound material has to be cut back before the repair can be built. This is why we scope with an allowance and a hold point rather than a flat figure.
- Coating. A structural repair is minor next to the fairing and paint that makes it invisible. Topside paint in a tropical climate needs controlled conditions and cure time.
- Parts lead time. Imported components carry customs and freight time. Where a part has a long lead, we scope around it so the yard slot is not burnt waiting.
- Season. Yard rates and slot availability tighten before the dry-season charter run. See timing yard work in Bali.
Emergency repair
If the vessel is taking water, aground, or has lost propulsion, the first call is not about scope — it is about stabilising the boat and getting it somewhere it can be lifted. We keep a short list of facilities that can take an unscheduled lift and the tow and salvage contacts to get a boat there. The process is set out in emergency haul-out after grounding or impact damage. Scope and estimate follow once the boat is secure, not before.
Bali Shipyard is a coordination desk, not a yard owner. We survey the vessel, write the scope, place the work with an independent yard or contractor that suits the job, and supervise it to handover. Quotations are issued in USD. Contracts for construction, repair, refit and vessel sale are issued by PT Komodo Galangan Nusantara.
Documentation
Every job closes with a file: the agreed scope, the variations with the approval that authorised each one, photographs at each hold point, and the completed item list. That file is what an insurer or a surveyor asks for later, and it is what a buyer’s surveyor will ask for years from now. How to keep it usable is covered in documenting repairs for insurance and survey.
Frequently asked questions
Can a repair be done with the boat still in the water?
Yes for anything above the waterline and for most systems and interior work. Anything involving the hull below the waterline, running gear, or coatings needs a lift, which makes the job dependent on an available slot.
How quickly can a boat be looked at in Bali?
Attendance afloat is usually possible within a day or two anywhere along the south Bali coast. A lift depends on the yard's slot book, which is the real constraint during the dry season.
Do you handle insurance repairs?
Yes. Insurance work needs a tighter paper trail: photographs before disturbance, a scope that separates damage repair from betterment, and variations approved in writing. We scope insurance jobs in that format by default.
Can you repair traditional timber hulls?
Yes. Timber repair in Indonesia is a live trade rather than a heritage exercise, and plank, frame and fastening work is routinely available. It is scoped differently from GRP work because the discovery allowance is larger.
What happens if the yard finds more damage than expected?
Work stops at the hold point. You get photographs, a revised item and a revised USD figure, and nothing further proceeds until you approve it in writing. Unapproved variations are not accepted into the account.
